Phalaenopsis lueddemanniana.

Epiphytic specimen from the Philippines first introduced into cultivation by Luddemann of Paris in 1865 and described by H.G. Reichenbach the following year.   

Quite variable in size, leaves up to 30cm.-(1ft.) long & 9cm.-(3.5”) wide – mid green in colour; inflorescence sub erect, arquate or pendulous; flowers up to 6cm.-(2.3”) across, waxy & fleshy; petals & sepals are marked with purple/magenta  transverse bars on a white background, the rear of which are white; lip carmine with yellow suffusion at base; column purple with greenish yellow anther. 

Warm growth is necessary, partial shade, 60% humidity and good air movement.   If potted a very open medium with some water retentive element which is kept moist is needed.
